- A documentary about Jim Sweeney, veteran of the Comedy Store Players and feted grandfather of impro. We trace the life and laughs of this titan and how he turned Multiple Sclerosis into a positive force in his journey. Featuring interviews with Paul Merton, Josie Lawrence, Greg Proops, Mike McShane, Steve Frost and Eddie Izzard. The life and work of Jim Sweeney (The Comedy Store Players, Whos Line Is It Anyway). Jim has been presented with The Granada Media Comedy Writing Award and the prestigious Scotsman Fringe First for his play Dannys Wake. His latest work My MS and Me played to audiences in London and New York and was adapted for Radio. Directors Statement The genesis of this documentary was an ongoing conversation between Lee Simpson and Jim Sweeney during their numerous car trips to and from The Comedy Store, London. Jim had become increasingly dependant on his fellow Comedy Store Players to help with transportation as his MS worsened. The initial impetus was simply to create a document as a keepsake for his children. Jim came to me with the idea for a documentary in the early part of 2008 and as we worked together it became clear there was a greater story to be told. This story begins in late 70s London; a Catholic grammar schoolboy finds himself in the midst of a cultural revolution. Picking up the torch passed down by Theatre Machine, its a story of the growth of improvised comedy, from its emergence on the Fringe to Whose Line Is It Anyway, and onwards to The Comedy Story. Its a story of how a shared love of theatre, comedy and improvisation created a community. Lastly its a very human story about overcoming adversity and striving for creativity in the face of apparently insurmountable odds. We have been truly fortunate on this project. I would like to thank all of the contributors for being so generous with their time and spirit. The heartfelt feedback from the screenings, with the perfect blend of support and disregard, has been positive and inspiring. I hope it will be for you too.
- Filmed in front of a live audience, Aubree Sweeney is bringing the thrill of the classic variety show to today's stage with special guests Sam Dobbins, Ayman Samman, Kody Fields, Scout Durwood and more.
- Sweeney, the hod-carrier, having disposed of the contents of his dinner pail, sits down in the shade to doze away the remainder of the noon-hour. When he sleeps, a fairy appears and touches him with her wand. In a transformation he awakens in affluence, and in a dress-suit as he appears in "Sweeney and the Million," The fairy disappears and Sweeney swaggers down to his swell residence and is met by the letter-carrier, who gives him a large bundle of important-looking letters. The first one he opens informs him that the million dollars lost in the poker game is coming back to him by parcel post. It requires a strong man to deliver this package. Mrs. Sweeney, "all dolled-up," meets him at the door. He fires out the footman and the other servants. They open the package and are flooded with bank notes of large denominations, and they proceed to hide it in bundles all over the place. Their next appearance is at the function in Mrs. Gandergilt's palatial drawing-rooms. The guests are playing bridge, and when Sweeney comes in on the arm of his friend patrolman McGlone, it raises a commotion, as they fear a "pull." Sweeney calms their fears by giving his guardian a large roll and sends him on his way. Mrs. Sweeney takes a hand in "bridge," and her consort invites all the non-playing men to the buffet, Sweeney gets drinks on a table and falls off. Whereat he is exceedingly angry and swashes everything in range, including a waiter carrying a large tray of glasses. In the interim Mrs. Sweeney has an altercation with the hostess and upsets a card table. The Sweeneys indignantly take to their automobile, visit flower shops and purchase millinery. In the latter place she buys a $250 hat that looks like a floating island, and shuts out all the lines of sight in the cabaret. Sweeney goes to sleep in spite of the commotion, and then is awakened from his dream by the cry for "mortar, mortar," with the blowing of the whistle.
- Sweeney, a hod carrier, falls heir to a million, and proceeds to rake in all the cash that he and a corps of messenger boys can carry. He sees a taxicab and the chauffeur demands so much an hour. Sweeney buys the machine outright, and throws the ex-owner out. He and his wife race up and down the city and create a sensation by "loud" attire and equally "loud" eating in a swell café. They also give a ball that has some extraordinary dancing "stunts" on the part of the Sweeneys. As a finale, he goes to a fashionable "club" and is trimmed of spare cash and all his other property, real and personal, as the result of a rash bet across a revolving card table. He is thrown out and goes back to the hod next morning in his dress suit.
